On Sunday, July 26, 2015, Rise to Education will be hosting their first walk-a-thon at Emmancipation Park starting at 6pm. The proceeds from this walk will go towards our back-to-school event and book drive which will both be happening later this year. CONTACT US for more information on the walk and how you can donate!
This week, RTE volunteers went to tell our friends at the Parade Gardens Community Centre goodbye for the summer! The kids expressed their deep regret for such an early goodbye but remained excited for the upcoming school year. We will miss our weekly visits! We can't wait for next year either!
This Thursday and Friday, our 6th graders from the Elliston Road Primary School that attend the Brown's Town Homework Centre took GSAT! But before the big days, we paid them a visit to reinforce some basic exam tips, encourage them with our own GSAT stories and most importantly get them to relax! We played a bunch of games and as the afternoon progressed, the girls ended up playing a series of popular ring games and the boys were of course engrossed in their football!
Thanks to social media, we got in touch with a new friend, Rachelle Van Dijk from Toronto, Canada who has spent the last two weeks going to the homework centers and volunteering with us! The children at both Fletcher's Land and Parade Gardens have grown to like her and we welcome her to the RTE family. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors and thank her for her short-lived yet incredibly beneficial participation in the organization!
On Thursday, February 12, 2015, we had our first motivational talk in the form of a "GSAT Talk" for the students from Ellison Road Primary School in Brown's Town. We spoke to them about calming their nerves and gave them great advice and other tips on how to maximize their potential and do their best!
It was a great beginning for our members this week! Check out our pics from both Parade Gardens and Fletcher's Land visits to see the great time they had, especially the kids! #welovehomwork
More of our new volunteers visited the Fletcher's Land homework center last Tuesday and expressed how amazing it was! They loved the kids and vice versa.
Last Sunday, we had an orientation for new volunteers and a workshop for new and existing members. We had guests who spoke with us on how to interact with the children and how to motivate and teach them effectively. Our new volunteers shared why they wanted to be apart of our team and were fully engaged and interested in the presentations made by our guests. The meeting was a complete success and everyone is completely devoted!
Entering the new year, we got a lot of new volunteers (pics to come) to which we are extremely grateful! Our first set of volunteers went to the Parade Gardens Community Centre this evening and were captivated by the childrens' zeal to learn and to learn their names of course:). The goodbyes were long and difficult as the students got so attached to our new volunteers in just an hour! They truly made an impact. We can't wait to further this bond!
Our executive members went to Fletcher's Land's homework center to check it out. The area, in terms of the building is very secure and the children were very welcoming and they had a blast! Can't wait to spend our Tuesdays with them!
